FAQs

  • Cutting vs. engraving—what’s the difference?
Cutting goes through the material; engraving marks the surface.
  • Which materials are safe to cut?
Common options include acrylic, wood, cardboard, some fabrics, and other laser-safe materials. Avoid PVC and unknown plastics.
  • Why won’t JPEG or PNG work for cutting?
They don’t contain paths. Laser cutters need vector files like AI, DXF, or PDF.
  • What software should I use?
Illustrator or LightBurn are common choices. Export clean vectors at the correct scale.
  • Any quick tips for cleaner results?
Use the right material, nest parts to save stock, keep optics clean, and choose sensible power/speed settings.

Same-Day Laser Cutting in LA: Is It Possible?

You need a project done today. Is same-day laser cutting realistic in Los Angeles? The answer: often yes, but it depends on what you need and when you ask. Understanding how same-day turnaround works will help you plan and get results when you need them.

What Makes Same-Day Possible

Shops with multiple lasers running simultaneously can often squeeze in rush jobs. American Laser Cutter's four large-format machines give us that flexibility. If you submit a simple job early in the morning, we often have capacity to get it done the same day. Complex jobs or large batches are less likely to meet same-day timelines, but simple cuts and engravings frequently do.

What Determines If Same-Day Is Feasible

Simple acrylic or wood cuts with minimal design work? Likely same-day. Dozens of identical pieces? Depends on how much time the cutting takes. Custom engraving with complex artwork? Might need a day for design review. Material sourcing? If we have your material in stock, that's fast. If we need to source it, that's an additional day. Ask about your specific needs—don't assume.

How to Get Same-Day Done

Call or email early in the day. The earlier you contact a laser shop, the better your odds of same-day turnaround. Have your design file ready or know exactly what you need. Be flexible about material if your preferred option isn't available. Accept that same-day work might cost more than standard turnaround—expedited service carries a premium.

Quality Doesn't Suffer

Same-day turnaround doesn't mean rush quality. A good laser shop maintains the same quality standards regardless of timeline. What changes is priority and scheduling—your job moves to the front of the queue, but the actual cutting and finishing meet normal standards.

When to Not Plan Same-Day

Complex custom work, large quantities, materials that need special sourcing, or jobs that require design consultation aren't realistic for same-day. For these projects, plan appropriately. A 48-hour turnaround is often achievable and allows more time for careful execution.
