Hardwoods, finishes and design tips
We cut and engrave a range of solid wood — hardwoods like walnut, cherry, maple, and oak, and soft, fast-cutting basswood and balsa — up to about 1/4″ thick. The laser leaves a light toasted edge that many designs use as-is; it sands back easily, or we can mask the surface to keep the faces clean.
Wood also engraves beautifully, the laser darkening the surface for logos, names, and artwork with strong natural contrast. Send vector files (AI, DXF, or PDF) at 1:1 scale for cutting; we cut, score, and engrave in one pass by mapping operations to colors. One note: we do not cut MDF — its glue fumes and charred edge make solid wood and Baltic birch the better choices.
Common questions
How much does laser-cut wood cost?
Every job has a $65 minimum and a clear itemized quote — priced by material, cut time, and quantity, with no setup fees.
How thick of wood can you cut?
Up to about 1/4″ on most hardwoods. Softer woods may go thicker at slower speeds — ask us.
Will the cut edge be burnt?
Wood cuts with a light toasted caramel edge. It sands back easily, or we can mask the surface before cutting to keep the faces clean.
Can I bring my own wood?
Yes — bring your own laser-safe wood and we do not mark it up. Tell us the species and thickness with your file.
What file format do you need?
Vector files — AI, DXF, or PDF — at 1:1 scale for cutting. Raster images work only for engraved photos.
