The best wood for laser cutting.

Not every wood lasers the same. Here is what cuts cleanly, what engraves best, and what we will not run.

Baltic birch plywood: the all-rounder

For most projects, Baltic birch plywood is the best place to start. It is void-free, so the beam cuts evenly, and it holds press-fit joints well. We cut it up to about 1/4″ thick. Read the plywood guide.

Basswood and balsa: fast and clean

Soft modeling woods cut quickly with a clean, light edge, which makes them ideal for scale models, prototypes, and craft work.

Walnut, cherry, maple, and oak: for finished pieces

Solid hardwoods are the favorites for awards, plaques, cutting boards, and engraved gifts. We cut them to about 1/4″, and the laser leaves a light toasted edge that sands back easily. Walnut, cherry, and maple engrave with strong natural contrast.

What to avoid

MDF is the main one. It produces heavy smoke, glue fumes, and a badly charred edge, so we do not run it. Hardware-store plywood can cut, but hidden voids and inconsistent glue make results vary.
